What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common condition where distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. While often diagnosed in childhood, myopia can worsen over time if left unchecked. Myopia can be caused by a combination of genetics, eye shape, and environmental factors such as prolonged near work or limited time outdoors.
Why is myopia management important?
“While small amounts of myopia are not necessarily concerning, the amount of myopic progression and the high levels of nearsightedness are rapidly becoming more prevalent worldwide. High myopia puts an individual at greater risk for pathologic vision conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration, and early-onset cataracts. Early intervention to stop the progression of myopia is important because there is no method to reverse the ocular changes once they have occurred.” — Dr. Hansen
Nearsightedness often begins with blurry distance vision, but as it progresses, it can increase your child’s risk of serious eye conditions later in life. Higher levels of myopia are linked to retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. All of these conditions can lead to permanent vision loss if left unmanaged.
Slowing myopia progression during childhood helps your child see clearly today while protecting their long-term eye health.
Myopia control options
Morrison Eyecare offers proven strategies to manage nearsightedness, including:
MiSight® 1 day contact lenses
MiSight® 1 day lenses are the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lenses shown to slow myopia progression in children ages 8–12 when treatment begins. These daily disposable lenses offer a dual benefit: they correct distance blur while also helping reduce the rate of myopia progression.
Supported by the longest ongoing clinical study of soft contact lenses for myopia control, MiSight® 1 day slowed myopia progression by an average of 59% over three years.1 Additionally, 41% of children wearing MiSight® experienced no progression during the study period.
Low-dose atropine eye drops
Low-dose atropine drops are a safe, effective option for slowing myopia progression in children. These prescription drops are used once daily, with one drop in each eye at bedtime. Side effects are typically mild and may include slight pupil enlargement, temporary light sensitivity, or brief near-vision blur.
Stellest lenses for pediatric myopia management
We’re pleased to offer Essilor Stellest® lenses, the first FDA-authorized spectacle lenses proven to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Studies show these lenses can slow myopia progression by an average of 71% over two years.2 Our eye doctors will design a personalized plan to help ensure your child’s Stellest lenses fit well and support their everyday activities.
Stellest lenses are commonly recommended for children ages 6–12 with myopia, with or without astigmatism. Your child may be a good candidate for Stellest lenses if:
- They’ve been recently diagnosed with myopia
- Their prescription has been increasing consistently over time
- They’re too young for, or not ready to wear, specialized contact lenses
